Information, tips and instructions

Open EML File

EML file extension is used to store email messages in RFC-8222 format. Many applications including Outlook Express, Thunderbird, Apple Mail, Windows Mail, Postbox, and others use EML format to export and import e-mails.

EML file consists of two parts:

  • e-mail header with fields specifying recipient and sender of e-mails, date and time, subject, encoding and content type of e-mail.
  • e-mail body containing actual e-mail in format which depends on encoding specified in the e-mail header part.

To open EML file you can use Microsoft Outlook Express or other e-mail client applications of your choice. If you don’t have any available, you can rename EML file to MHT and double click on it. MHT format is compatible with EML and MHT files could be opened by any web browser.

EML files are transferred over e-mail or internet using message/rfc822 multipurpose internet mail extensions (MIME) type.

You can also use third-party EML file viewers to open EML files. Download EML File Viewer Tool from FreeViewer. This tool can view EML files generated by various client software including Microsoft Outlook Express, Thunderbird, Apple Mail. It allows various viewing modes for e-mail content including hex view, email header, properties, etc. Also, EML File Viewer Tool can open corrupted EML files using automatic advanced scan feature.
